ORPHEO MCCORD

Orpheo McCord is a composer, percussionist, and multidisciplinary installation artist whose work explores the intersection of sound, light, and space as a pathway into heightened states of awareness. Rooted in a lifelong devotion to rhythm and resonance, his practice investigates the harmonic relationships between natural frequencies and human physiology, revealing how sound shapes perception, emotion, and presence within spatial environments.
As a founding artist of Chromasonic, McCord has co-created large-scale immersive environments such as Sensory Field and Satellite One, where participants are enveloped in synesthetic atmospheres of color and sound. In 2024, Sensory Field was commissioned by Google for Milan Design Week, receiving critical acclaim for its innovative fusion of art, science, and experiential design. His ongoing explorations draw on phenomena such as the Schumann resonance, psychoacoustic entrainment, and harmonic translations of planetary frequencies—transforming these subtle forces into multisensory experiences that foster awe, coherence, and embodied awareness.
Parallel to his installation work, McCord is an accomplished musician and recording artist, best known as a core member of the Grammy Award–winning group Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. Over more than a decade of collaboration, he toured internationally and contributed to the band’s acclaimed albums—including Up From Below and Here—which helped define the sound of a generation’s folk revival. His dynamic percussion work has also led him to record and perform with artists such as The Fall, Cass McCombs, Bright Black Morning Light, and Fool’s Gold.
Beyond the stage, McCord’s musical life extends into ceremonial and contemplative settings, where he creates live sound offerings in service of prayer, celebration, and reverence for the liminal. Through improvised percussion and harmonic textural atmospheres, he supports collective experiences that invite participants into deeper states of presence and remembrance. These practices, along with his continual engagement with musicians and ceremonialists across Ghana, Mali, Gabon, Morocco, Cuba, Mexico and Ecuador continue to inform his understanding of sound as a communal and transformative force—one that bridges inner experience and collective resonance.
McCord’s recent projects focus on site-specific installations built from natural materials such as adobe, cob, and glass—structures conceived as living instruments. Integrating embedded transducers, acoustic chambers, and apertures for natural light, these sculptural forms transform architecture into resonant vessels that invite stillness and deep listening. His current exploration bridges ancient traditions of sacred architecture with contemporary sound design, creating contemplative environments for individual and collective reflection and prayer.
Through his evolving body of work, McCord seeks to restore listening as a vital act of connection—between body and mind, human and environment, the material and the unseen. His installations, ceremonial practices and performances invite participants into states of attunement where sound becomes not merely something to hear, but something to inhabit: a vibrational field that reawakens our sense of belonging to the Earth, the Cosmos and to each other.
